Tommy Young "Slavery"
Superb dancer with Van McCoy taking the honours musically and our lass doing what she does best, its from the 1975ish "Moses" soundtrack. Definately in the box for
Yarmouth, assuming they let me near a set of decks.
Eddie Murphy "Patience"
From the "Dreamgirls" soundtrack and what a stunning mid tempo dancer this is, it
has everything, and its getting spins too, which is nice.
Lou Wilson "Come on over"
Brand spanking new southern soul goodee, that Dave Welding stuffed into my hands at without boundaries, its too soulfull for the 'premier league' jocks to play on there shows, plus it has the dreaded "southern" word used to describe it,
buts it really is one
Soulful tune.Evens Steve Hobbs waxed about in B&S…..

Gordon Chambers "Stay Together" (Dome) cd album
Top tune co written with Eric Benet and originally recorded by the Temptations – a
quality dancer.
Raw Artistic Soul feat John Gibbons "In Their Eyes" (Gogo) cd album
What a superb production that glides effortlessly and an amazing vocal from
Mr Gibbons to match
M Swift feat Vanessa Haynes "Kosmic Love" (King) cd album
A brilliant soulful dancer from UK lady of gospel Vanessa Haynes - if you liked
‘Morning Light’ then this is just as good, maybe even better!

Power "Once Upon A Time (In Love With You)"(Powerized)
Soul/Funk Group Power return with a superb set featuring lots of old school group harmonising. The whole CD has an 80`s feel running through it, and is epitomised by "Once Upon A Time" a lovely midpacer which carries on where the Persuaders left us
last year.
S
imone De "Since I lost you baby" (Premiere)
A new name to me, but what an introduction. A straight up Soul LP with "Since I Lost You Baby" just edging out "Show me"  as the cut for me. This swaying midpacer has a Southern Soul feel to it, and with real musicians backing Simone it helps to enhance
An already top quality tune.
Lou Wilson And Todays People "Trippin` Out Over You" (Crew)
A track from 2006 that the Soul crowd missed. A prodominantly Blues CD but "Trippin` Out over you" is a gorgeous floater which grows on me every play. Perfect
Music to listen to on a lazy summer day.

Shirley Walton

Colin Dilnot:  In Dangerous Rhyhm
Shirley Walton "Send Peace And Harmony Home" (Enterprise)
One of only 2 records by her at Stax. A poignant song written by Al Bell, Eddie Floyd and Booker T. Jones for Dr Martin Luther King. The song was completed after they
heard news of Dr. King's assassination in Memphis on 4/4/68
Andre Williams “You got it I want it” (Ric Tic)
A pounding piece of Detroit music from the wild man of soul recorded at the Golden World studios in 1966 with the Meditation Singers on backup.
Nate Adams "Love Slipped Thru My Fingers" (Acetate only)
A song better known by Sam Williams on Tower but also produced by Johnny Brantley on reputedly 10 different versions! Nate's version has the edge for me over the Sam Williams and Harmon Hitson versions - why? - it just has a rawness and reminds me of cold nights back at the Wigan Casino in the 70's when it was played by Richard Searling.

Steve Plumb

Best thing I've bought in 5 years, just superb
Calvin & The Catamounts "I know my baby cares for me" (Catamount)

Sublime soul
Skip Jackson and the Shantons "Promise that you'll wait" (Dot-Mar)
Best and original version of a wonderful tune.

Steve Dolan
www.stevessoulsounds.co.uk

Brad Lundy "What Would You Do" (Lundy) 7"
A fantastic beat ballad from 1977, the kind you could imagine Walter Jackson  singing.Lavish strings, heart wringing vocals. This just does it for me – soul heaven.
Tony Troutman "I Truly Love You" (Gramophon) 7"
Fabulous piece of soul from Atlanta. Sheer class from start to finish
The Velvet Touch  "Don't Let Me Down" (Wildcat)  7"
A group ballad to die for. There were so many great tracks on the tiny independent
Labels during the 1980’s and to me this is up there with the best.

Eddie Hubbard
Jimmy Levine / Maysa Leak " All in love is fair "
A mesmerising , slow burner , featuring the beautiful vocals of Maysa Leak on this great Stevie Wonder song .From the very consistent Jimmy Levine " Share my love " set , i's gonna take a great record to shift this from the No 1 spot !!
Amy Winehouse " He can only hold her " [ Back to Black CD ]
First heard this when Brian Goucher dropped it on Shaun Robbins excellent Solar Radio show , forget the politics , this a brilliant production on a great song , performed in great style by Ms Winehouse , love the horns on this track - just a killer !!
Florence Trapp " Love came into my life "
Finally available on the great new Jazzman compilation " Sister Funk 2 " , a great memory jerker from the mid 80's Stafford " Top of the World " period , via Robin Salter , I can finally file that grainy C90 tape away , and enjoy this in pristine quality , good things come to those who wait indeed ..........

Power "Started all over again" (Powerized cd)
Mick, you put me onto this, the album is superb but this sax laden sleeper is nothing short of a masterpiece.
David Sea "Hook up to the heart" (Park Place cd)
Yes, I know, not exactly cutting edge to some because its a couple of weeks old now, for the past six weeks, this subtle, floating mid pacer hads hogged the laser flicker, and it still floats my boat.A stunning tune, and those vocals................
Benny Latimore "I'll be good to you" (Dade 7")
My current fave seven, very early 70's southern gem, with those now familiar vocals, if enough jocks got behind this it could go, big time, but there's the dilemma, who's going to point your ' very average' jock towards this.It doesnt command big money although I think its actually rarer than I first thought, but not rare enough for some. Sad innitt.

Tad Robinson - Ain't That Loving You (Severn) cd album
Gorgeous floaty midtempo soul stepper from the new album 'A New Point Of View' - could be a big thing @ Soul Essence !
Ben Tankard feat Shelley Massey - Let's Get Quiet (Verity) cd album
Proving it's not ALL about the beat - a fabulous downtempo contemporary soul groove perfect for radio and early doors.
Full Flava feat Kelli Sae - Bad Habit (Dome) cd album
On an album full of dancefloor friendly covers - this just edges some of the other more obvious choices like Donna Gardier's 'Glow Of Love' and Carleen Anderson on 'Was That All It Was'

Colin Dilnot: In Dangerous Rhyhm
Thomas East You're What's Happening (Toddlin' Town)
An Andre Williams production and a real groove.
Johnny Dean “Sitting Around My Table” (Magic) 7
A gorgeous early 80's Memphis side out of Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios
Myron Cephas “It's Your Life” (Mil Smi)
Another early 80's side out of Mobile Alabama. A meandering soulful 45 from the days when indies were still pumping
out 45s every week

Mark Hougton/ A New Chapter  markh.realsoul@blueyonder.co.uk
Trudy Lynn - You`re The Only One (Sawdust Alley).
Missed by the Soul Djs in 2006 this would have walked into my Top 3 of last year.Take a legendary vocalist backed by the Calvin Owens Orchestra and add to the mix a quality mid tempo song and you have all the right ingredients for a cracking record. Simply put, for lovers of traditional flavoured Soul this stands alongside anything i`ve heard in the last few years.
Eddie Leon - Just Got Tired Of Waiting (Leon).
A name i first became aware of in the mid 90`s when his version Sam Cooke`s "Nothing Can Change This Love" (also on this CD) was featured on an Ace (US) Records compilation of recent and unreleased Southern Soul. It was only when he released his superb "Let Me In Your Arms Again" CD a few years later that i began to really appreciate the rich soulful tones of Eddie. After some investigation i discovered that he had released an earlier CD "All Wrapped Up" A good CD overall but it`s "Just Got Tired Of Waiting" (a remake of Luther Ingram`s "Trying to Find My Love" which was actually done as a duet on his other CD) which is the standout cut. It stays pretty
Dorothy Moore - The Going Ups And The Coming Downs (Malaco).
Taken off the "Once With Feeling" LP which also features the wonderful Sam Dees penned "Girl Overboard" this Jim Weatherly written track is one of those hidden gems just crying out for plays. The formula of laid back verses follwed by catchy , memorable choruses which 70`s Soul fans have lapped up over the years is repeated here, and with Dorothy`s unquestioned vocal prowess you have a surefire winner.

Eddie Hubbard /Banbury Soul Club
Willie Lee “Man that I am” (Gator)
It may credit Willie Lee on the label , but there's no mistaking the distinctive vocals of Willie Tee on this beautiful downtempo groover .Not super rare , but I've been after this for a while .
Little Milton Campbell “Somebodys changin ' my sweet baby's mind” (Checker)
Great Donny Hathaway arrangement on this class Chicago outing , by the ever dependable Little Milton .The legendary George Jackson had a hand in the writing credits as well .
Leone Thomas “Thank you baby” (Don)

Great 1976 dancer from Leone, on boxing promoter Don King's own label. This kind of up-tempo semi funky style is really in vogue at the moment , I reckon this could really go , superb femme support as well .

Kashious "All over again" (2006 Gordon RecordsCD)
If only this had arrived before Yarmouth, what a tune, strutting guitars intro, into a subdued mid tempo pace, just about the finest vocals Iv heard for an age. This is the kind of music that Yarmouth cut its teeth on, new, fresh and soulful. Eternal thanks to Steve Dolan for putting this my way.
Donnie Williams & Park Place "Invisible Man" (2007 Chump Change Records CD)
Old hat to a lot of folks, and I must admit Iv had for some time myself, but I cant stop my daily fix of this superb track, another subdued sound but it has an early feel to it, almost a 60's chink chink base line hidden in there, its also the best showcase on the album for his voice which at times struggles with what he's trying to do. Another essential tune.
Jamie Principle "Date with the rain" (1990 UK Atlantic 7")
I recently had a record room built here at home and for the first time in 14yrs my whole collection is now in one place, and Im having a ball filing tunes away, 100's of which I had forgotten about, Im having a second love affair with this uptempo warts n all dancer, easily the best version of a great tune, JP's vocals ride a torrential backing of drums, base , strings and horns. Its getting some serious needle time here at the minute alongside other early 90's stunners, Movement 98, Robert Owens,Lenny Williams,Michael Watford, Ray Morrison, Mr Fingers "On a street corner called Jazz", another brilliant dancer that has been played here for the past 20 yrs on and off.Im on 209 with Mick in a couple of weeks at the Strawberry fair, its going to be an late 80's early 90's special.Iv also been asked to do Soul Purpose in October, I might just do an early 90's spot, that should have the purists running for cover, will I have my 'Lounge' membership revoked. Having read this thier probably holding an exraordinary meeting to discuss my treachery as your reading this...........My defence, its soul music to these ears..

Superb mitempo SOUL groove on another consistent quality set.

Steve Dolan
www.stevessoulsounds.co.uk

My selections for this month are 3 CD's that in my opinion are stunningly goodand will appear in many a top ten if not a top five for this year (or any yearfor that matter)
Kashious “ Kashious”    (Gordon Records)
This CD has created quite a buzz since its debut on Soul Discovery only a
fortnight ago. Kashious seems an exceptional talent writing all the
exceptionally good songs but the  voice, oh the voice, is just incredible. Rumour has it that a second album isdue in August this year, what a mouth watering prospect
Bigg Joe “I Like Big Girls”  (Baby Boy Records)
Another debut CD. Bigg Joe is a member of the band that backs Mel Waiters andhas been so for a number of years. However this guy will be a major star in hisown right. He is billed as the Luther Vandross of Southern Soul and it’s easy to see why. The album is crammed with fabulous tracks and as with the Kashious it is unfair to single out any one. Hopefully it will get an airing on Soul Discovery on the 5th May. If it doesyou are in for a treat.
Rickey Rush “ A Slow Rush”   (New Sounds Records)
This CD is crammed with with classy slow jam tracks ala the Isley Brothers.
Rickey is the son of bluesman Otis Rush so music runs in the family. I feel that this CD like the other two represents everything that is good about the newly released material.Hopefully it will find a place in Mr O'Donnell's first eleven for his show on the 5th May.Three pedigree CD's in a year of outstanding releases and its only the beginning of May, if we get releases later in the year that match these 3 it will definitely be declared a vintage year!

Dave Porter/ Vivid Sounds

Mavis Staples "Down in Mississippi" from CD "We'll Never Turn Back"
V/A CD "Warm & Tender Love" 22 tracks of outstanding New York earthy soul from the 60's (Japanese)
Johnny Daye "Let's talk it Over"
from the CD by Robert Peckman "Stirrin Up Bees". Johnny Daye is guest vocalist and steals the show !! Pity he didn't sing more .
Reactivated 45
Elaine Garrett "What About Me"

Micky Gynn / Collector/Part time D.J

Andrew Curd “Spinning Dizzy” (Lemco)
Awesome 2-spetter from the late 70s, Only managed to obtain this recently
but well worth the wait. At any midtempo session will be massive, only
negative just not long enough.
August “If he makes it good” (14kt Gold)
Again from the late 70s. What a period for great music, I suppose I’m a
bit biased, as it is the time I started collecting 1977 onwards. Fabulous group
sound I, which just adore, one to pick before price rockets.
Oddysee & Company “You I love” (Fatboy)
Staying in the mellow tip. A record I’ve had on tape four years but again only just picked up. You can hear tracks 10 years later and they sound even better than you imagined. Never tire of this type of sound. It could be because of all the miles of running I’ve done over the years I’m slowing down big style.
MY HOT TIP
Leon Cooke “The last to know” (Roar)
Rod played this to me 1 year ago and I have it. Never seen it since so no idea How tough it is. Sounding very much like Peabo Bryson at his best.80s midtempo soul of the highest order, one to buy blind and if you don’t like it I will take it as a
Spare that’s how good this is.

Mike Charlton

The Newcomers  "That's When You Know Your Woman Wants To Be Free"(Mercury)
Great mid-pacer from the Memphis group produced by Allen Jones of The Barkays.
Michael Rainey  "Wrapped Too Tight (If He Ain't) (Rainey) CD cut 2006
This has just surfaced in the UK  - Fabulous up-tempo feelgood mover out of Memphis. Beware! Rest of album is a hotch potch of styles but does include a great ballad entitled "Is It A h Baby".
Betty Fikes & The Passions  "I Can't Lie To My Heart"(Southbound) ‘45’ 1974
Finally tracked down a copy of this elusive Selma, Alabama recorded beauty that had eluded me for years after Rod Dearlove whetted the appetite on one of His infamous 'Deep' tapes. Fabulous!!

David Sea Believe In Me Shotgun

Oliver Johnson “Day Dreaming Again" ( Quinn Music 2005)
A horns n all dancer that if there was any justice would be sitting at the top of all jocks playlists, southern, YES, but what a tune, Johnson's voice is the real deal too, a trumpet player as well which he uses to fabulous effect. His album " Luv n Thing" (2006) is also one soulfull affair with great bursts of that trumpet, the ballad "Lied For The First Time" will be in a lot of top tens for the year. What a find, aint life great.
Lafayette Harris Jnr “Darlin Darlin Baby(LFJ2006)
The O’Jays classic revamped into a brilliant new version for 2006/2007, this guy is a jazz pianist, but he's also one soulfull guy, taken from his album which also contains a superb head nodder in the title track "In The Middle Of The Night".I may be preaching to the already converted, but its new to me and I'm mightily impressed.
Theryl Houseman DeClouet "Love Makes The World Go Round (DCE CD 2007)
He's turned one of the great 60's dancer's into a chugging two step masterpiece, base heavy, tinkling piano, subdued drums, and that hoarse voice making this tune his, occasional female backing, just adds to the brew. The album is also being touted for his version of "Risin To The Top", but its this geat stepper you will want it for. Absolutely the dogs bollocks and then some.
The Fabulous Caprices " My Love" Camarro 45)
This months vinyl tip.I'm typing this at work so can't remember the year, its about 74 ish, and its set to go the way Papa Bear And The Cubs has, very very similar in style but this is far more soulfull. I was scouring the shelves for tunes to play at the Wilton Alniter on July 6th and one play later it was in the box. I remember reviewing this in Mark Bicknells 'Soul Underground' magazine about ten years ago and I expected it to go then. You need this one now.
I'm also spinning EJ Johnson,Ruby Baker,Men of Essence,Dells off the album "Urban Music In The Movies",Mo & Grazz, Lonnie, Carl Joiner and loads of other little beauties.

It has been very difficult to select only 3 tracks as there seems to be a glut of quality soul around at the moment. Tracks from the E.J. Johnson, Soccorro, Onyx1 ft Terrence Forsythe, Allen O, Anita Easterling, Praz Bosanova to name but a few all featured strongly in my thoughts for the top three, however in the end I have picked the following:

Ruby Baker - Motions of Love from the Love Is Worth It All CD
What a stunning track from an absolutely stunning CD that has had a similar impact on me that Songstress did when I first played it. I can't stop playing this CD and selecting the one track seems so unfair check out All My Love and Come to Me.
Dre T - Infatuated from the Tasty EP CD
Great ballad from a great singer - fabulous.
T.K. Soul - Love T.K Soul from the "Undisputed" CD
The Bad Boy of Southern Soul pours his heart out on this ballad that bemoans the fact that his women fall in love with T.K. Soul the soul singer and not Terry Kimble the
man. It even sneaks a little refrain from Teddy P's "Love TKO" - class.

Real soul going from strength to strength - if a Danish Lager Brewing company made soul it would definitely (not probably) be like this!!

Eddie Hubbard /Banbury Soul Club
Marvin Sims - Love is on the way / Blow away breeze (Rivertown)
First heard Love is on the way on a John Manship unknowns tape in the late 70's , after retrieving my copy from the collection I realised what a great 70's dancer this is , with a very memorable hook line. Flip side is also great in a deeper vein, a dreamy slowie with Marvin able to express his full vocal range.
The Fourth Creation - I think I would cry / Why is there no trace of you (Daren)
A wonderful 70's dancer on this Chicago indie , flipped with a stunning sweet soul ballad .
Jimmie Delphs - Do you know what I mean (DSSI)
Jimmy is of course remembered for his 60's Detroit dancers for the Carla logo Almost , I've been fooled before ,Dancing a hole in the world etc. With a slight change in the spelling of his name , he turns in a brilliant performamce on this down tempo side from 1978 .

Phil Perry - The World Is A Ghetto (Shanachie) cd album
A fantastic cover version from Mr Perry of an already great song - and the production is spot on - massive on the dancefloor.
Tricia Angus - Living My Life -The Realm Remix (Papa) 12"
Top tune remixed to perfection, with the so so soulful vocals of Tricia Angus sounding awesome.
Fabio Nobile feat Tania Michelle - Didn't You Know (Deja Vu) 12"
Tune ALERT - number three in the series from Fabio Nobile and the best one yet, if you liked the first two then say no more - an absolute Summer ANTHEM no problem.

Brian Alexander “Don’t want to sleep alone tonight” (2 note)
Fabulous dancer from around 1998.Don’t know anything about the artist,But he can certainly sing well. Put this on a tape a for Mick awhile ago and it knocked Him out.
Lance Ellis “Taking a chance” (Landlord)
Again a superb dancer from the mid 90’s taken off a mainly sax led instrumental album, this vocal track is the business .So many of these fusion lps had a hidden Vocal on them, worth tracking down.
Michael Ross “We finally meet” (Miki)
This track from 1992 is again a mainly instrumental album. The last track on the cd is fantastic midtempo winner.Justlove this mellow sound and the sax takes it to anther level. Track of this quality make us realise why we adore this type of music.
Vinyl Choice 90s
Marvin Gaye “My last chance” (Motown)

Ric E Bluez " Lovin you aint easy" ( 2006 Betty Lowe Records cd)
A copy of this cd arrived back in January from my good friend Jim Wray but somehow it got lost in the deluge of music that arrived at that time, but slowly this head nodding ballad has garnered repeated plays and is currently sitting very near the top of the pile.I have since acquired a legit copy........I know nothing of this guy other than he is a very accomplished vocalist who has surrounded himself with some top players and created an in parts excellent album which as you would guess satisfies my  ' southern ' craving. If you fancy this then contact Dave Porter at Vivid Sound as he's the only one supporting this set.
Joy Denalane " Something stirrin up" ( 2006 Nesola cd)
Oh wow, from the moment I heard this I was hooked, although the whole album has been plundered by every soul jock I know, its this ballad that seeped into my head from the first play and wont let go. There are some stunning moments on this album and everyone who has it undoubtedly will have a favourite, real contempory musicianship that paints a wonderful backdrop for this ladies soulfull vocals, several tracks have male raps but dont be put off, all have something worthy to add. This album has been in the car player for weeks now, love the nod to Johnny Nash half way through this epic tune. Mary J and Faith Evans are queens in my house, JD has put herself up there with them as a future automatic buy.The last time I was struck by a tune like this was back in 2004 when Teena Marie & DeDe O'Neil's "I love him too" was heard for the first time.
Sweet Angel " Easy loving you" (2007 cd no label details)
Iv been tracking this cd for some months now ever since it appeared in Daddy's southern top ten pre-releases, if you like Shirley Brown this excellent 10 tracker s a must. The album is titled "Another man's meat on my plate" but my fave track is a mid tempo sax driven dancer that I cant stop playing. Her voice is a very powerful tool she uses with consumate ease.Eight examples of story telling over a mainly synthesised backing, quite brilliant lyrically at times. Going to be a big cd in my house for years to come. I love it.

This months vinyl tip is aimed at lovers of deep and comes curtosy of Communicators & Black Experience Band "One chance" (Duplex 7" late 60's early 70's).An absolutely stunning example of this genre, group harmonies, swapping leads, simple instrumentation all create the ultimate tune.Came out on Turbo but the quality of the vinyl as with most releases on this label leves very little to be desired. This has also surfaced on a brilliant 36 track compilation titled "Tears full of soul" Basements David Cole selecting the tracks, a cd that should be acquired asap.

Ty Causey - Back to Loving You
Stunning piece of mid-tempo soul that is so more-ish. The album is very strong and "So Addicted" and "The Way You Are' challenged the selected
track strongly.
Mr Sam - I'm Comin Home
Tremendous ballad from Sam Fallie better known for his song-writing skills.
Roi Anthony - Long Way From Home
What a great voice and what a track

Eddie Hubbard /Banbury Soul Club
Rozetta Johnson - You better keep what you got [ Shotgun ]
Rozetta's so soulful vocals was an ideal vehicle for Sam and Lillian Dees sensitive lyrics back in the early 70's , she only cut a handful of quality sides , so it's indeed great news that Paul Mooney has rescued this unissued dancer from the vaults .Deserves to become popular on all the varied Soul scenes in the UK and beyond , can't wait for the album " Personal Woman " too , which includes all her Clintone sides .
Susan Phillips - He's gone [ Tears full of soul CD ]
One of many brilliant slowies on this fantastic new double CD from Sanctuary records , another key track is Lezli Valentine's take on The Moments " Love on a two way street " , and can't forget Linda Jones still amazing " I can't make it alone " the ultimate in abandoned wailing - unbelievable !!
Jesse James - It's the last time around for me [South Side Soul Survey CD ]
Always loved Morris Jefferson's version of this song , this is an unissued version by the ever brilliant Jesse James , which has emerged on this superb new CD from Garry Capes new Soulscape outlet .There are so many great CD's around at the moment , it's hard to keep up , though we wouldn't have it any other way !!

I’ve been looking through some old LP’s from the 90’s and came across this album vocals by “Al Broomfield” this is a mellow jazzy song with a lovely feel to it.
Brenda Lee Eager “Love In Motion” (BMP)
Forgotten how wonderful this track was. Again not played this since it appeared in the 90’s. Superb vocal performance and one of my favourite 90’s tunes.
George Butts “Keep That Same Old Feeling” (K-Star)
Back into the 80’s with this one. Yes another version of a great song. If you, like me, love 80’s quality soul, this is another welcome addition to the collection.

Mandissa "Love Somebdy" ( 2007 EMI CD)
From a gospel album titled "True Beauty" comes this contempory styled gospel dancer which has an anthemic feel to it, huge dance floor capabilities as the sound is very now, her voice is effortless ad the production is top notch. The rest of the album has its moments too but nothing to compare with this. Sadly those that claim to be into modern contempory soul music have totally ignored this, I wonder why that is.
Kim Askew " Come Fly With Me" (2007 Southpaw Productions CD.)
Currently my top album with so many top cuts its hard to choose a favorite, but this dancer just shades it for me. Her voice echoes shades of Roberta Flack but she's very much a top vocalist in her own right, once again the production is top notch, other notable cuts are "Adore You" "I'll never leave you" and " Love that didnt go my way", but it doesnt stop there, the rest of the album is quite superb too. I cant stop playing this album at the minute.
BLOODSTONE " Now, thats what Im talking about" (2003 Check it Records)
Iv gone back a few years for this gem of a midtempo dancer, I was inspired to go back to this having seen it arrive back in at CD Baby recently, as a new release I was inspired by this track and now, four years later, nothings changed, the album is a joy but this tune is nothing short of a masterpiece. Its very like the Imperial Wonders track we were all championing not so long ago.Great swapping leads, wonderfull harmonies and Cornell Hardy's sax, stunning……….

Im also enjoying the superb Yvonne Yanney " Your kind of loving" off the latest James Taylor Quartet album, a dancer with an Isaac Hayes type production, its one of those dancers that is so unique that it really could go.The Dells " Say you'll stay" from an album titled "Urban Soul Music In The Movies", I'll describe this simply as what you would expect from these guys in ballad mode. Juanita Williams fronting the Fred Hughes Band on a simply breathtaking version of "And Im telling you Im not going", forget Jennifer Hudson as good as that is,this latest version is in another league, I think its on a par with the original.
This months vinyl tip comes curtosy of indie soul man Lee Edwards and his "Prove your love", a tidy downtempo shuffler, from the album "Shades of love" on DT Records. Early 80's I suspect, the album also contains the two sevens that I know of, "Equal love opportunity" and "I Found Love". Always did like his voice, in the upper ranges. One to seek out and enjoy.
 cheers
Gouch

Patrick Henry - Bye Bye Baby from the Contagious CD
Have had a minute long sample of this track for a couple of months now and
knew that when the CD got its release it would make that month's top three.
A classic soul ballad - fabulous.
Sammie Relford - I Been Thinking About You from the Solo Flite CD
A tremendous midtempo piece with a bit of an Al Green feel about it.
J. Diamond Washington - Git Wit It from the Git Wit It CD
This little beauty is a bit of an oldie as it came out in 2005, however I don't
think it is that well known though hopefully that will change - the track is a
tremendous modern soul dancer that in the right hands should become
 A monster.

Midtempo tune. Not too expensive to pick up at the moment.
Joseph Cotton “Day by Day” (Pashlo)
Alas, unlike the above record this 80’s masterpiece is a real tough one
to acquire. Without doubt one best 80’s tracks in my collection.
After a spin on Mick’s show last Nov, Rod Dearlove had numerous calls
So I’m not alone in my thinking.
Visions of a New World “Children” (New World)
Sounding very much from the late 70’s; the era I started getting into
this type of music. Artists like “Pleasure” and “The Blackbyrds” would
usually have outstanding tracks like this on their albums. No idea about the
group or it’s rarity.

Dave Porter/ Vivid Sounds
Walter Jackson Vol 3 on Kent
A Man Needs a Woman, Mainstream Label compilation on Japanese P-Vine. There are 4 Volumes of this stuff and this one just shades it as the best comp.
Bettye LaVette, Scene of the Crime on US Aim. Nice to hear her back on form with soul music.
Re-activated 45 is I Tried To Tell You by The Entertainers on Chess, Dan Penn song produced by Rick Hall.

I Can't Explain It - Ann Nesby  ( This Is Love 2007  Shanachie )
The queen of gospel,ex lead vocalist with Sounds of Blackness, the lady just oozes soul on this mid tempo grower from her new album. Quality cd release also includes her collaboration with DJ Spen in reviving Mandrills It's So Easy Loving You, plus This could be love is another great builder on this set !
Get to know you - Ledisi  (Lost & Found 2007 Verve)
One of Neo Souls leading lights. This track taken from her current Lost & Found album, one of many killers from this set including Joy & Alright.
Big shouts to for In the Morning and I tried. If you enjoyed her classic Soul Singer set then this is for you.
Angel - Chaka Khan  (Funk This 2007 SMG )
Three in a row from the divas. This is one of the quality cuts from the new Chaka Khan cd. Quality ballad that just builds bringing out the lady's natural vocal talents. This is Chaka revisiting her Rufus days and also features Mary J Blige.A few low points but overall a return to form for Chaka !

Three major label projects for 2007.Well worth investing your hard earned money.Ann Nesby ,Chaka Khan and Ledisi ! What a line up !! It's a Ladies Night !!!
Cheers

Geraldine Hunt - Together (TGO LP track)
Born in St Louis, Geraldine moved in the mid-70´s to Montreal where recorded her first album and soon became a disco star. Hidden in that LP is this fantastic ballad worth a listen.
Bill Wright - You´re the only thing I´ve got going for me (Note 45)
As good as his excellent and better known sides at Tragar and Midtown.
Sharon Cash - To get him back (Playboy LP track)
Lovely deep track from this lady who recorded a couple of albums -the one for Plaboy being particulary good- before joining Honey Cone.

Mark Merry
L.L.C - Pain Comes At Midnight - Guaranteed For Lovemaking - Anytime -LCL
Great track first played by Dave Porter on Soul Discovery sent us all scurrying for copies was hard to find originally but a few turned up now, dont miss it absolutely essential infact lots of other goodies on the cd
Bloodstone - B with U Tonite,Come and Get It,Your My Baby - Now Thats What Im Talking About - Bloodstone RecordsBrand Spanking new long player from vetran group Bloodstone Cant seperate these three tracks all top drawer a but if ui had to pick a winner it would be B with U tonite, miss it at your peril.
Eli "Paperboy" Reed & The True Loves - Its Easier -Q-dee - 45 & CDS
Words cant describe how unbelievable this is proper proper deep soul great song, horns fantastic cooking band and brand new too sounds like it could have been made anytime in the last 40 years but catch this he is 22 and wait for it white yes but absolutely classic sound. Check it out.
Chris Jasper - Invincible -Gold City
Great title track that back in the day well early to mid 90s i would have called a modern dancefloor filler, well it does in my house ,quality gospel cd with not too much preaching if that puts you off and loads of other tracks worthy of play "keep reaching higher" & "I know that you love me" being two
Mashaa' - Love Somebody Else - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere - Waylo
From a revamped Waylo label comes willie mitchells latest project this is the killer track for me but also check "all we need" and "is it love" amongst others her voice really grows on you with repeated plays and well worth picking up and should be getting plays
Lee Genesis - Reachout - The Soul Of Lee Genesis - Berger Platters
Vetran of the music industry with both secular and mainstream recordings under his belt and also a house music producer as well but no worries here a straight up soul set is what we have ,the aforementioned "reachout" should be getting played out but the lp is packed full of quality songs and real musicians, real soul its out there go and find it.
Melissa Young - Just A Girl - Free Download
Thanks to Mick’s blog for this one go and check her myspace site to download this but dont worry there is a full lp of other goodies due later in the year "Just Up The Road" -Sugarshack Records is the lp mick has another killer "Rock With Me" on his myspace and i,m sure there will be many tracks aired on his show over the coming months ,vocally she is fantastic kinda cross between Betty Wright & Gwen Mcrae.Make Sure you check this one out.
Angie Stone - Baby - Hidden Beach - CDS
Mentioning Betty Wright brings me on to this lead single from the new lp from Angie Stone, this killer contemporary groove has both Angie Stone & Betty Wright in top form lets hope this means betty wright will be back soon, should be seeing some dancefloor action this one and looks like Angie Stones new lp is going to be a goodie too.
Lee Starling - The Magic Is Gone - Just Good Music - CDS
The return of Stacy Lane who recorded for excello in the 60s good to hear him here, the production could be better if i was honest but this has a certain charm you will have to dig it out and have a listen for yourself but worth checking.
James E Gilbert - Best Kept Secret - Eugene Smiley Sr
Cheating a bit on this one came out the back end of last year and ive just managed to pick it up,great southern real soul lp title track is the one for me lovely little guitar line moves this along with real instruments suprisingly good production job again another well worthy of checking out.
Well thats it for now so so much quality gear around at the moment just get on "tinternet " and dig a little its all there
Cheers….Mark

Chazz Dixon VP Da'Soul Recordings Group, L.L.C.
SHOW ME - Writen because a label mate asked me during a session if I'd
write a song about her using her name (i.e. Carmen Nickerson). I told her
I don't do that. I instead penned SHOW ME.(smile) On a side note: I
first wrote the bass line for this song "J", who plays it on the record,
embellished the hell out of it James Jamerson style. I wanted that Marv
Tarplin feel on the guitar and "J" who also played the guitar solo did it
as if Marv T was riding his Gibson. I've known Marv T for a long time an
"J" does him proud here.
WE CAN FIX THIS - A song assignment from my boss and producer,
Da'Soul Recordings Group president, "J".
SAY IT, SAY IT - I penned this one 25yrs ago. It's been recorded
and re-recorded but this is the first version I've really liked. We do
each song on stage in my show.

Choklate " incredible" (2006 Choklate music)
A string laden, head nodder that captured my attention from the moment it stormed out of the speakers, the whole album is a funky, hip hop affair, but this track shines like a beacon in the dark.A top top female vocal to rival anything youv'e heard this year.Real intsruments coupled with a very famaous string loop, stunning.Could be tooooooo soulful for some!!
Kameela "Nothing else" (2007 Cookie Jar)
And another killer soul tune hidden within a funky, hip hop long player, and once again a killer female lead, dream harmonies and a sensational famous loop that just drives you crazy, soul music of the highest quality. These two have been hogging the laser flicker and getting daily plays since they arrived some 6 weeks ago, sensational tune. The album is titled "Changes; vol 1".
Helen & Terry "Strung out" ( 2006 JT Company)
Bit late with this one as I only heard it a few weeks ago, it arrived about a week ago, and WOW what an album, but this funky Emotions, Jones Girls type dancer has me totally hooked at the minute, set at a subdued pace but with enough to funk up any dance floor.Being the old git that I am I can still remember the impact JJA " I got the vibes" had on the dance floors of the time, we dont get that kind of reaction anymore, but this one did it to me, played loud it is one awsome piece of soulful tunage. Taken from the album "Superstar".
This months Vinyl tip;
Berres Hammond "Oh I miss you" ( 1981 Brotherhood Music Inc)
Without doubt my long running love affair with Jamaican music has resulted in virtually everyhting this great singer has recorded is nestling within my music room here at home. But this album took some 5 yrs to get in any reasonable condition, already well respected for the soul cuts by the thinking mans posse. The album is titled "Lets make a song" and has several cuts that would entertain places like the Orwell and Yarmouth, but "Miss you" is the one I keep going back to, would sit perfectly between Charles Johnson and Wee and I know which one would get the accolades. It would also sit comfortably alongside any of the new breeds getting spins too……
This is a prime example of whats currently happening with the scene at the moment, there are not enough small venues searching out tunage like this and feeding the larger venues, weekenders have taken over and a great many folks are going to the seaside for a few days, to hear "play safe playlists". I'v verbalised on this subject already elswhere, SO, the only way the alleged "premier league" jocks will hear something like this is if it lands at a dealer somewhere, and that aint going to happen as most dealers I deal with dont even know it.So the larger audiece will have to wait another ten years untill one of above mentioned jocks begins playing it, claiming it as there discovery, he/she will probably cut it to a seven and cover it up and begin getting all the plaudits, thus raising his already lofty status to god like one. Ah the joys of being a collector of fine black orientated

music................
I'm also getting off on Chaka Khan, what an album, Ann Nesby, Monique Ford, Clifford Thompson, Martha Burks, Grooves Back, Sharom McMahan, Patrick Henry, Lakeisha and loads more. Aint life great.....................and remember folks "Do unto others before they do it to you"...................get in first everytime.cheers

So much to choose from again this month, however I've gone for: -
Vick Allen "Breaking Me Down" & "Good Love"
from his brand new CD which although only 7 tracks long is still excellent.
Lola - this album is just top class, I can't decide on one so I am picking 5
tracks "Look My Way"; "Don't Go Away"; "Wash Your Hands"; "Lets Call It A
Night" and the duet with William Bell "Shake Hands" - awesome
Jody Sticker - "In Or Out" & "Unexpected Guest" from his latest CD - I really
like the underproduced almost minimalistic feel to this album - fabulous.
Others that came close include the new Latimore CD the bonus tracks on the
re-released J. Blackfoot CD and the unreleased tracks by Lee Fields, Frank-O
Johnson and Floyd Taylor excluding because they are not available yet.
Cheers

OakIII aka Oakland 3 - Sweet & Nasty - New Rhyme Records
Absolute killer debut long player real quality soul music nearly every track is top class and sure to be in my top ten come the end of the year check out track 2 " just wanna be with you" for an excellent slow jam, track 4 "now that love is gone" very o'jays in quality & style a definite highlight for me,"I cant say no" nice chugging 80s style but the 2 tracks that make this absolutely essential are back to back "all about staying together" & "cant let you go" as good if not better than anything else this year.check it out.
The Embers -Last Time I,m Saying goodbye -CDS
Forthcoming single from the Embers new lp "the show must go on" a killer dancefloor tune with all the right ingredients should also appeal to the strings and things brigade killer vocals hard to believe they are white, but they are but ooh so soulful worth picking up now before it disappears and the lp never surfaces hope it doesnt happen but stranger things have.Get it now you wont be disappointed.
J Blackfoot - It Ain't Over Till It's Over -JEA
An Lp that originally appeared in 2006 but resurfaced again in 2007 with two extra tracks and what extra tracks they are a highlight of the original was the duet with Lenny williams "Im just a fool for you" resurrected for the 2007 version as a killer duet with Charles Jones and oh so soulful had plays on Soul Discovery already its that good. The other new killer is the duet with Ann Hines absolutely fantastic well worthy of purchasing for the second time and on that note get yourselves over to Steve Dolans fantastic site choc o block of quality new soul releases showing just how much of the new good stuff there is around at the moment.

George Guess - Do it to death [ Pearl Harbor ] 1973
Great ballad cut in Philly at Sigma Sound in 1973, love the strap -line on the label " Our bombs are direct hits " - great stuff !!
Quiet Elegance - Have you been making out ok ? [ Hi ] 1975
Featuring the wonderful vocals of Frankie Gearing , a superb femme version of the Al Green song , records like this are priceless in my book .
Sarah Vaughan - I need you more [ than ever now ] [ Mainstream ] 1974
Superb mid tempo waxing from the legendary Jazz Diva , reminds me of Maxine Brown's " I can't get along without you " in feel , this also got released in the UK on the same label .
Denise La Salle - No matter what they say [ ABC ] 1978
Overlooked midtempo dancer on the flip side of Denise's great ballad " Working Overtime " , this should get played.

Micky Gynn / Collector/Part time D.J
Ocie’III “What’s my returnon love” (C.I.M.)
Only available on an issue copy. Most probably won’t appeal to many soul lovers but I do
Like the top quality Boogie, which has superb content and vocals for this genre of music
this is wonderful.
Players Choice “Am I the one”(Big Mamma)
Great name for the label and a lovely 2-step track out of Tennesse. The tempo and quality
Of this record is about the same speed I now run around a football field.
Janice Dempsey “I won’t give up on you” (Geffen)
This wonderful midtempo tune comes off the surprisingly hard to find album from 1987,
Which is a vintage year because Coventry City beat Spurs 3-2 in the F.A. CUP final that Year. Any excuse to mention that special time for me.

Mark Hougton/ A New Chapter

Darryl Askew - We Can Make It (DAS)
Georgous lazy floater with nice summery feel from the brother of Kim Askew . Quality Old School Soul.
Clifford Thompson - Baby Don`t Hold Back (Goldwax)
Welcome release from the legendary record label. A very solid album with real instruments abound. This brassy midpacer (also cut by Elvin Spencer) just takes the honours. Real deal southern Soul.
Lodee Murchison - Never Get Enough Of Your Love (Kon-Kord)
A quality version of the ultra rare Ben Jackson track.Uptempo with a distinctive 80`s feel this can be found on a Kon-kord compilation of issued and unissued material.
Honourable mentions to Patrick Henry,Chris Jasper, Sammie Relford,Al

Hughes and Ronnie Mcneir. Also, look out for a couple of corkers by a Rance Allen soundlike (Mick will tell how good they are) which are certain to be in my Top 3 of this year .
I`ll hopefully get a copy over to Mick in the next couple of weeks. More details in next months chart.

Larry Hamilton "I hope its not to late"
Now that Larry is finally finding fame elsewhere I thought I'd review what is for me the outstanding track on the album, some years ago I used to play this excellent dancer alongside the likes of Earl Thomas, Frankie Lee, Ann Peebles, Portia Griffin etc etc, it starts off ok and then transforms itself into a Willie Mitchell type dancer, harmonies popping up at just the right time, our man is in fine form. Perhaps its time to give this another go.His other albums all have some fine moments too.
Patrick Henry & The Liberation Band "Loving You"
Wow, I was totally unawhere of this quite brilliant dancer untill young master Dolan mentioned it to me, but nothing prepared me for my first listen, strumming guitars take center point, ably backed up by slapping drums, some simply wonderful vocals of which the chorus "Im loving you, I'll always be true to you" will become a singalong, arms in the air soundbite. This is possibly one of the top dancers to come way for a number of years, surfaced in 1998 on the album titled "Come and get it" to little or no attention.Patrick Henry of course is well known in soul circles with a handfull of excellent albums, he has a classic soul mans voice, the Liberation Band are is regular live band whilst touring. The other great thing about this cd is that it aint a one tracker. If you dont buy another cd this year this one should satisfy your craving for some time to come. Im told Messrs Houghton and Merry were on the case some time ago, oh well, better late than never.
Four Tops "Soldier of love"
The very wonderful 'Cellarfull Of Soul' series is an automatic buy blind for me, essentially a series of unissued, acetates and first time released Motown tunage, were up to volume three at the minute, crate digging is an art, but when you have access to the vaults where boxes of crumbling tapes, are simply lying there awaiting the diggers ears, then thats serious crate digging on a scale I can only think about. You know what!, they have done it again, two cds rammed with exquisite cuts that just leave you drained.BUT they have surpassed all that has gone before them, The Tops on an unreleased dancer from, wait for it, 1981............It aint like anything you've heard the them do before, absolutely the dogs bollocks of a tune, which should be in your collections curtosy of HMV for under a tenner.

Im sure Steve will be saying this as well, but there is so much good stuff around at the minute its hard to keep up, my wants list is growing all of the time, anyway onto this months vinyl offering, having guested on Micks show recently the one tune everyone is talking about is Roscoe Gordon "Find yourself another fool" (Bruboon 7") a stunning emotion filled ballad with a hook that simply draws you in, dating I would guess from the early seventies, I saw Micks reaction when it was being played in the studio, and I'v been accosted by a great many soul folk wanting the details. I have no idea where I got this from or how long Iv had it but I do remember spinning it at the first ever deep soul session in what is now termed The Lounge at the Yarmouth Soul Weekender. Which nealtly brings me to that hollowed place, I'm told bookings are up and there flooding in, not sure of the reasons but perhaps the bubbles burst elswhere and people want to get back to real soul played by real soul jocks without politics and ego's, putting the music first............All era's, styles etc.The bottom line folks, if you intend to go, better get on the case now and reserve your seat in the lounge. You know whats happening on the Friday, the Tony Blackburn of Cambridge will be there with some of his dwarf mates popping along as well. Care in the community at work.Who says Goucher has no heart.

Sir Charles  Jones - Just For You
Fabulous ballad and one of the three new tracks from the man's new "Best Of" CD.
Leni - Treat Your Woman Right
A tremendous CD that was released in 2006 and missed by many - the CD is
stuffed with goodies and it was a close run thing between the track chosen
and the equally stunning "Love Is The Answer."
Floyd Taylor - You Still Got It
I was lucky enough to receive this track about a month prior to the CD's
release and pardon the pun its "still got it" for me.

Lee Fields - My World/Love Comes and Goes (Truth and Soul)
What a pleasant surprise this 45 was. Two fantastic tracks which sound like they were made in the early 70`s. My World just edges it for me but i can see both tracks becoming popular among the more enlightened 70`s/Crossover Dj`s who are now starting to pick up on the likes of Bobby Warren and Trudy Lynn (featured in my top 3  way back in April).
Patrick Harris - Right On Time/Missin` Your Love (Lyn-Rome)
Taken from the cd "Long Time Comin`"  i can`t seperate these two standout cuts. Firstly you have "Right On Time" a joyous mid pace dancer with a great melody, then there`s "Missin` Your Love"  a lovely aching floater which shows off Patrick`s vocal talents nicely.
B Dupree - Time Zone (Down South Music)
An 80`s flavoured set which although sometimes let down by the production does feature a few above average dancers and this lovely subtle "Old School" ballad reminicent of those 80`s indies such as Tyrone Burwell,General Crook, RB Hudman etc

Walking the city streets - George Jackson [ Can't be satisfied CD Ace/ Kent ]
A superb previously un- issued track from the vaults of XL and Sounds of Memphis catalogue , now included within a fabulous CD of Deeper Soul from Ace records .Great story line ballad , this is as good as any of George's released sides IMHO .This CD also includes George Jackson's legendary rarity " Talking about the love I have for you " which is totally essential as well .
Living in the land of heartache - The Cavaliers [ Larry Banks family album CD Ace /Kent
Second choice from the Ace catalogue this month , and another unissued side , this time from New York , and epitomising the big voiced ballad sound of the mid to late 60's , fantastic string and piano charts topped by some fantastic vocals , if you dig Kenny Carter's stuff , this is in a very similar vein , not suprising with the legendary Larry Banks at the helm .
Doorsteps to sorrow - Rudolph Randolph [ A man needs a woman CD Japanese Mainstream ]
A great Deep Soul side included within this superb new Japanese release of Mainstream / IX Chains sides , there are 4
volumes of this material , this particular volume is in a Deep / Crossover / 70's vein , and comes highly recommended .

The Velons “It’s up to you” (BJM)
Starting this month with a big thanks to Steve Dolan for putting this my way
Recently. Fabulous track off an album from the late 90’s,most certainly not a one-track album.
Keiko Project “Midnight Shuffle” (Canyon)
Only ever released in Japan, with vocals by Terry Bradford. Thelate 70’s early 80’s Brought a mass of Jap lps into this country. This track off a mini LP is one of the best.
Frankie Gearing “Teardrops” (Beale St.)
Staying with quality Jap release only soul, this one of the best ever-female soul records in my opinion. You go through the collection and you come across something
As good as this, you know why we collect this type of music. Just so good

Tracey Whitney - A Woman In Love & Welcome To My Life - Love A Fable In 9 Acts - Babydoll Entertainment –
A good debut lp for ex raylet Tracey Whitney very 80s sounding in places but pretty solid throughout the killers to these ears is the very Anita Baker sounding "A Woman In Love" written by Robert Brookins (again Of 80s fame) good backing vocs and overall feel on this one and the other track "Welcome To My Life" excellent mid tempo winner well worth checking
Euge Groove feat Jeffrey Osbourne - Baby If I Only Knew {What I Could Do} - Born 2 Groove -Narada
Solid Enough Jazzy Funky cd with some nice sax from mr Euge Groove is taken to another level by Jeffrey Osbourne absolute killer killer tune wicked vocal as you would expect if this isnt lighting up modern soul dancefloors everywhere there no justice oh and a quick mention to the other excellent track on here by Ali Ollie Woodson a great version of "I Love You More Than I ever Know"
Snoopy Dean - I Dont Want To Be Alone & I Came For Love - Travellin Man - EMG
Not sure how widely availiable this is but its a  welcome return for Snoopy Dean last heard of back in 1992 on "Read Between The lines" ive got to be honest i,m not sure if it is even new and happily to be corrected {ooH err Missus} if its not,but to get to the point fully of excellent tracks but the winners for me is the mid tempo killer "I Came For Love" chugs along nicely as you would expect with quality vocals .The other track "I Dont Want To Be Alone" is an excellent ballad which to me sounds very Sam Dees {note gotta keep off the stella} no it does ,check it out on the net i,m sure you will agree.
The Velons - A Chance To Say Goodbye - The Velons & Their Divas
A Big thank you to Steve Dolan for initially putting me on to the Velons whose cd from 1999 "Its All Good ,Its All Right" is a classic every track on it is a winner and well worth checking his site for,but this track is from their new CD just released and is an amazing track killer vocals excellent heartfelt ballad well worth checking out and for me its going to be up there at the end of the year if you love group soul this is for you.
the velons & The Divas - A Chance To Say Goodbye
Parker - This Worlds Gone Mad & Being Without You - Moe Soul Records
I will be 100% honest here and say i was so looking forward to this release the snippetts on Parkers website sounded great  and on getting the cd rushed to the title track i will say now that "This worlds Gone Mad" will be up there in my ten for the year very marvinesqe midtempo with excellent lyrics the next track also is excellent too "Being without You" but after that i was really dissapointed i had expexted so much more after those two tracks were so good but being a soul fan how many lps have we got like that so disapointment aside well worth picking up and another quick note of warning {gotta stop shooting myself in the foot} no no he doesnt sing like you would expect after seeing his picture thast may encourage you too search it out.ENJOY.

Colin Brown
Joe Simon - "Yours Love" Monument.
This delightful slice of Mid-Pace magic was issued circa 1970.It is a ready-made "Early Doors"tune with Joe singing in fine voice. The backing is a subtle Southern Beat, which holds together very nicely behind the Vocalist. For those interested, on the "B"side is one of Joes` better Northern Dancers-"I Got A Whole Lot Of Loving ".My copy is a French Issue which has a great "Picture Sleeve",why did they not issue those so much -over here?
Tavares - "Judgement Day" Capitol.
A fine example of up-tempo 70s Soul.An Inspirational Song that is not too heavy on the "Churchy Theme"-if you know what I mean.A good Dancer that is made for the more energetic Soulies.Unfortunately I can only remember those days. The Tavares` performance on this is top notch. If you do not know it keep an eye open because when the Northern/ 70s Jocks get hold of it,the Price will rise.Like so many others.
Lea Roberts - "Excuse Me( I Want To Talk To You" United Artistes.
This surfaced around about 1973. When I first listened to the first 3 Bars of the Intro I thought it was too Funky to my tastes but then letting it run it becomes a nice mid-tempo tune.I must admit I do not know too much about this Lady but I believe she also  recorded on "Minit" Records during the 60s`.Lea has a good powerful Voice when she lets rip,but why that dodgy intro?Never mind another 45 that will not break the Bank.
All the Best,
 Colin

Brian Goucher/ www.soulessence.co.uk
It’s been a fabulous year for new, recent and decent soul tunage, its been turning up in abundance at just about every outlet I know. In fact its been so good that my acquisition of vinyl is at an all time low, the latter was forced upon me at the beginning of the year due to personal circumstances, as the year has progressed I just simply concentrated on the cd’s. You know what I havn’t missed the vinyl either, well that’s not strictly true, I miss the deeper sevens landing on the doormat.  Anyway Mick asked me for my top ten of 2007, so here goes, in no particular order, a serious play in the house all through the year has been Theryl “Love makes the world go round” stunning meandering balladry with enough of a beat to tap your feet too. On the same tip comes Parker’s “This worlds gone mad”, a quite brilliant subtle dancer that will without doubt stand the test of time and go onto become folklore. I know it’s getting big raps elsewhere too. Two other tunes that have also hogged the laser flicker are Choklate with “ Incredible” and Kameela “ Nothing Else” tracks from albums not normally associated with soul music but as essential as anything Iv heard this year. Both got a huge response when aired on Mick’s show.
Then there is Kashious with his anthemic “ All over again” another subtle dancer that again will have its day, and for more of the same give Big Joe “Just walk away” a spin straight after, stunning tunes. Tad Robinson “Aint that loving you” is another that simply won’t be filed away, again I think this one will come back and haunt a few that didn’t take the plunge, one hell of a voice on a quite superb production. Who could forget David Sea “Hook up to the heart”, this one suffered because of the quality of the rest of the album, I think many missed this, its another top top dancer.
More recently Ann Nesby “This could be love” has shattered the silence here at home, but again the masses went for the more obvious dancer, she sounds so so good at the minute. And finally Oak III with there breathtaking O’Jays soundalike “All about staying together”.Well there you have it 10 tunes that get me shuffling and stepping my way around the house, not a ballad in sight, now that’s a breathtaking list of killer tunes for another day.

An almost impossible task given the amount of material around, however to
help narrow the field I have decided to select from material actually released
in 2007. The list of one's that narrowly missed but deserve recognition
include "Fathers Children, Lenny Williams (that CD has really grown on me),
T.K. Soul "Try Me", Patrick Henry "Bye Bye Baby", Chris Jasper "Invincible"
Sammie Relford I've Been Thinking About You", Jerry L "Lies" and Carl Sim's
"I'll Go Crazy

Early contenders for 2008 if they ever get released include Lee Fields "At The End Of The Day"; Al Lindsey "Call Me" and Wendell B "She Didn't Have Ta Hurt Ya Boy Like That."
Top Ten
Bigg Joe "Running Back To Me"
Kashious "To Make A Difference"
Floyd Taylor "Sweet Love"
Mr. Sam "I'm Coming Home"
Lil Falley "I Wanna Make Love 2 U"
Lola "Don't Go Away"

Mark Hougton/ A New Chapter
markh.realsoul@blueyonder.co.uk
Al McDaniel -They Don`t Know/Very Special Lady (CPA) –
For collectors/DJ`s like myself  who are constantly looking for new sounds there are the those rare occasions when you stumble across something with that "wow" factor. These two cuts (among a few other quality tracks) did just that. From the gospel tinged "They Don`t Know" through to the midtempo future anthem "Very Special Lady" it was good enough to snatch top place as my best of 2007.
Trudy Lynn - You`re The Only One (Sawdust Alley) –
From when i first tipped this track back in April i knew this would be a certainty for my Top 3. Reaction from Soul audiences and other DJ`s since then have confirmed my initial reaction. A fantastic piece of midtempo 70`s flavoured soul music.
Embers - The Last Time I`m Saying Goodbye (Bluewater) –
Thanks to Mark Merry for making me aware of this timeless joyous dancer. This single from a forecoming LP (which promises to be a corker) could well go big at Crossover and 70`s venues in 2008 .
Duhart/Katz - Get My Swerve On (Cribnote) –
A midtempo contempory dancer featuring some lovely strings and the powerful female vocals of  Asia. Another tip for 2008.
Lee Fields - My World/Love Comes and Goes (Truth and Soul) –
Another 2 tracks which dispel the myth that there no good Soul records made anymore. Crossover Soul for 2007.
Power - Once Upon A Time (in love with you/ Get Your Love (Power) –
Former Malaco recording act Power returned in early 2007 with a vengence . Overall a superb cd with the midtempo "Once Upon A Time" and dancer "Get Your Love" edging it as the top cuts from the album
Sharon McMahan -When Will Love Come To Me (So.Calitown) –
Sharon`s main claim to fame is writing the classic "Someday we`re gonna love again" for Barbara Lewis (although she did herself release a lovely 45 on Columbia). This comeback features a couple of excellent tracks with the lovely sax driven midpacer "When" just edging  "Summer Livin`" as the cream cut
Simone De - Since I Lost You Baby/Show Me (Premiere/Selecta) –
These 2 standout dancers proved so popular for Mick on the show that Paul Mooney decided to release them on a 7. Take your pick over which track or format  .
Darryl Askew - We Can Make It (DAS) –
Quite simply a laid back, but magic piece of Soul music
Kashious - Starting All Over Again/Bad Luck (Gordon)-
A big thank you to Steve Dolan for bringing this great new talent to Mick`s and ultimately our attention. Whether it be the raw but very soulful "Starting" or the heartfelt ballad "Bad Luck" you have soul music of the highest quality
Patrick Harris- Missin` Your Love (Lyn-Rome) –
A beautiful haunting ballad from yet another great  new talent
Theryl "Houseman" DeCloet - Love Makes The World Go Round (Theryl "Houseman" DeCloet) –

Thanks to Brian Goucher for bringing this classy "fingersnapping" version  of the Deon Jackson classic to my attention
Chris Jasper - Invincible (Gold City) –
Instant classic from the first time i heard Mick play it on the show. More plays could make it a Soul anthem
LJ Reynolds -So Good (Born again) –
From the "Fosters Babies" soundtrack top class contempory Soul with the legendary LJ and daughter Latoya in great vocal form
Al Hughes - Turned Around (Kat) -
This quality contempory dancer has crept up on me and grown from repeated plays in recent weeks
Joint Heir - Your Love Is Amazing (Joint Heir) –
Another thumbs up to Mr Dolan for bringing my attention to this excellent 80`s sounding dancer which went down a storm at the Soul 4 Real weekender (Bilbao) in July.
Lola (featuring William Bell) - Shake Hands (Wilbe)
Standout track from the recent cd . A lovely floating duet reminicent of William`s classic duet "Private Number"
Clifford Thompson - Baby Don`t Hold Back (Goldwax) –
Timeless Southern Soul with real instruments from the legendary label
Eric Cross -Oh Baby (Eric Cross) -
From the son of Stax recording artist Wendy Rene comes this laid back, subtle retro soul with a touch of class
Earl Gaines-Let Me Live My Life (Blue- FYE) –
Soul/Blues veteran Earl shows off his distinctive vocals on this excellent old school midtempo track

Angie Stone “Here we go again” (Stax CD)

Four great independent sides that I first heard via " Soul Discovery " on 209radio, talk about Soul music, which you never knew, existed, I feel we're in a golden period at the moment, similar to the mid to late 80's when the little labels carried the flag for Soul music.
Lesli Valentine “Love on a two way street” (Tears full of Soul CD)
Superb femme version of The Moments classic, one of my all time favourite songs.
Cheers

SOUL MUSIC was very much alive in 2007 and the musical highlights were essential new albums by Mavis Staples, Bettye LaVette, Lamar Thomas and Sharon Jones. I’d also like to praise Sharon McMahan, Simone De, Butch Williams, Al Lindsay, Oak III, Patrick Harris, Kashious, Bobby Hutton, Marcelle & The Truth and Eli Reed for delivering some outstanding tracks this year.

2007 saw many excellent reissue projects and it’s always an added bonus when previously unheard material is found in the vaults. My favourite vintage discoveries were by George Jackson on Kent and Rozetta Johnson on Shotgun and Soulscape.

Grapevine/Soul Junction came to an end after seven years but I continued to work with Garry Cape and enjoyed helping him to establish Soulscape Records which already has a strong catalogue. I am particularly proud of Personal Woman by Rozetta Johnson which was my favourite classic soul album of the year.

It’s a privilege to work in the music industry and I’m thankful that 2007 was another busy and successful year. We signed many new publishing deals at Millbrand Music and formed a sister company called Selecta Records, launching the Selecta and Shotgun labels with singles by Sheba Potts-Wright, Bobby Hutton, Simone De, David Sea and Rozetta Johnson. The response was very encouraging and I’m looking forward to 2008 which will start off with the amazing “Fool Of The Year” by Sam Dees.
At Millbrand we became more involved in media licensing this year and I was delighted to place ten classic soul songs in a new movie called Clubbed which will be released in 2008.

Unfortunately, 2007 saw the passing of many artists and it was very sad to lose Bob Relf in November. I’ll miss him as a friend and a valued client.

Time passes by so quickly. I had my 50th birthday on December 10th, the day that marked the 40th anniversary of the death of Otis Redding. I really can’t imagine a life without Stax or Motown and I thank God for the voice of Levi Stubbs.
Cheers

Brian Goucher/ Graduate Cambridge
www.barflyclub.com
With the first Graduate soul night fast approaching I thought I would feature some tracks that I intend to squeeze in at some point during the night amongst of course the wealth of new releases. In no particular order, first up then from 1999 and a big spin for me and Tank at the Blue Lagoon many years ago Special Blendz "Try my love" . A top dancer that was ignored by everyone as a new release, heavily featured at the time in Tank's soul mag too.But the album is worth buying for the killer killer ballad "Baby Baby Baby" which I played in the Lounge at Yarmouth to great applause. An early doors spin will be Jonathan Butler "You dont belong to me" from 1997, a stunning downtempo swayer. Two tracks from last year that hogged the laser flicker big time came from Leon McMullen "Its over" and "Time to let go" are impassioned horn laden shuffling gems that should get your attention first play.I also intend to resurrect some old Munster Arms spins too, namely Robert Tillman "Dont lie to me", a 1994 masterpiece that still sounds so damn good. Earl Thomas" I wont be around” a hammond driven dancer that used to ram the floor, and the wonderful Clay Hammond from from1993, two big plays when new were "Your full of magic" and "Tuning up", both sound so right for now, and finally the master, J Blackfoot from 1998 and "So Good" and "For the right reasons"There will be copious amounts of vinyl to plough through as well, last night I put Prince Gideon "Im so lucky" in the box, and for an early doors spin Vari "Nobody but you".
Just a early taster, see you all there.

Bobby Wayne Right About The Rain Bonedog
Bobby is back with a 3rd album which is as good as last 2 - some killer cuts on here - I prefer him on the original songs such as East End Avenue, Over and Over etc. But the above is pure magic sounding like early 70's Southern Soul at his best!!!
Stan Mosley Bitter With The Sweet CDS Entertainment
What a start to the year - another slow killer off Stan's new CD Man Up.
Jose James Blackeye Susan Brownswood
Beautiful music off The Dreamer CD from a singer who is like a cross between Terry Callier and Gil Scott-Heron which is no bad thing but he is still his own man - major young talent!!!!

Leonard Julien III - The Love I Let Slip Away - (Modeste)
One month gone in 2008 and Leonard here sets the standard for the rest of the year with this excellent set. Quality from start to finish ( watch out for "What She Don`t Know" on the dancefloors). For me though it`s "The Love I Let Slip Away" which takes the honours. An absolutely gorgeous achingly soulful midpacer which has the lot. What a start to the year !
Tony Fields - New Girl In Town (Brand New Girl) - (Tony Fields)
This strong set arrived a few days too late to make my best of 2007 chart but the subtle falsetto of Tony on the melodic and memorable "New Girl" has ensured it makes this month’s chart.
Immortal Soul - Who ? - (David W Martin Sr)
A mostly 50`s/60`s flavoured cd and it`s those 60`s influences in the mid paced "Who" which brings back memories of those great harmony groups from 60`s and early 70`s.

Eddie Hubbard /Banbury Soul Club
After a musically superb 2007 , particularly towards the tail end of the year , there is every hope that 2008 will just as musically inspiring , judging by some of the new and not so new sides I’ve heard so far in January , particularly on Mick’s “ Soul discovery “ show on 209radio .Jaheim came through right at the end of December with his fourth set “ The makings of a man “ and though it’s taken a few plays , tracks such as “ She don’t have a clue “ , “ Back together “ , “ I’ve changed “ [ with Keisha Cole ] his reworking of Bobby Womack’s “ If you think you’re lonely now “ and plenty more ensure this set is as good as his past releases .

I’ve just heard the new Bobby Warren set “ Soul station “ , and it’s another winner if you dig old style Southern Blue /Soul ballads such as “ I was right about the rain “ , or some great re -workings of old Northern Soul classics like Willie Kendrick’s “ Change your ways “ , Tommy Tate’s “ I’m taking on pain “ and fellow Okeh label mate Major Harris and his firm favourite “ Call me tomorrow “ - timeless music !!

One vinyl oldie that I heard towards the end of the year via . Terry Jones guesting on Shaun Robbins Solar radio show was the great Freddie Scott with his Vanguard outing “ I guess God wants it this way “ .Easily one of the best “ Big City “ ballads I’ve ever heard , can’t believe I’ve been unaware and lived without this gem for the best part of 35 collecting years , a gem !!

Mark Merry Collector/Part time D.J
Well ive got to say in all the time ive been doing this for Mick this is the hardest month ever to pick a top 3 its only just the end of janary and i could have a top 30 its been that good releases that didnt even make the top 3 from Jeff Ramsey,Larry Ross,Marvin Yates,Mose Stovall,Donnie Ray,Raheem Devaughan,Adrian,Bobby Wayne,Old School,Marquee Of Soul,Dwight Chappell,Al Williams III,Al Lindsey,Sir Wick,Arthur,Bernard and many more.
On too that all important top 3
Next To You - Blak Ice - Next To You - Black Kat Records
A quality cd from start to to finnish with the title cut being the icing on the cake something for everyone but this midtempo winner will become an anthem, there are loads of good midpacers and ballads on the album and one track featuring denise lasalle which is also a winner well worth scouring the net for.
What She don’t Know - Leonard Julien III - Reflections Of Soul - Modeste
One im sure that will fill the floor at the graduate a quality dancer every and i mean every track a winner reminded me on first listening of hearing Rodney Mansfields first lp for the first time itsthat good, every home should have one.
How Can You Say You Love Me - Maurice - How Can You Say You Love Me - GLoMar Entertainment
This is Maurice Jackson ex lead singer of the independents he of lucky fellow fame,my words cant do this track justice all i can say is its beautiful, unbelievable, fantastic, its a just below mid ballad with fantastic lyrics ,beautiful instrumentation its perfect in every way and once youve heard it you will be singing along to it all day, i know now that this will be my number one record this year without a doubt by the way it is gospel but not overtly so and the rest of the albums good too worth hunting down.

Well I’m all hot under the collar now such great music hope to meet a few of you at the graduateon the 2nd and share what will be a great night, til next time............How Can You Say you Love Me............... ooooh its great ...................night

Willie Clayton - Happy Time (Malaco) cd album
This guy never seems to disappoint, and he's back with another solid set for Malaco Records this time - 'Happy Time' is just one of several great tracks.
Leonard Julien - What She Don't Know (Modeste) cd album
Track for track easily one of the best albums you'll hear in 2008 - very reminiscent of Keith Washington vocally, this is a fantastic midpaced dancer !
Sir Wick - Seal My Heart (Sir Wick) cd album
Taken from another amazingly strong set - major label quality here on a quality dancefloor groove. So there you have it - three unmissable albums to start the New Year along with LAMONE and the new ANGELA JOHNSON album 2008 has certainly started with a real bang.

Colin Curtis: Kings Hall Stoke/ Blackpool Hilton
SIR WICK An Interpretation of a Universal Language.
Great start to 2008 just put it on and let it play.Great
arrangements, songs and vocals, this jusy flows.Full of highlights and
reeks of class for an indie.
Thank You Lord,I Can't Wait,Seal my Heart,Uncomplicated,Moonlight
Serenade,You are my everything it just goes on and on.
Do yourself a favour get this you will still be playing it as the year
goes on !
LAWRENCE BEAMEN Alright with me EP
Now here is a voice that given the material and the songs and arrangements is going to be a one to watch.
Reminds me of another unsung hero who also lacks some quality tunes and
arrangements Cunnie Williams.
Thinking of You with it's superb string stabs and delivery has been
giving me some great dance fllor reactions and interest.
The title track Alright with me well worth some attention too.
Hopefully a full cd will bring this guy's voice to greater
recognition,we can hope !
REEL PEOPLE Seven Ways To Wonder !!
Quality contemporary soul/dance. If you liked the Domu & Pete Simpson cd
you should lap this up.
Alongside the vocal talents of Tony Momrelle & Omar you have some great
female vocal contributions from Vanessa Freeman, Dyanna Fearon & Tasita
D' mour. This does what it says on the can drawing influences from
Quincy Jones,Maze,Incognito etc
Stand out tracks include the magical Amazing a real dance floor winner
and Alibi, Perfect Sky and Outta Love.
If your taste expands to that contemporary early 90's feel you will
enjoy this set.
Other listening pleasures to kick start 2008 include… Leonard Julien III,
Tonya Hairston Ware, Terrell House, Barbara Haynes, Mia Zuniga, Donald
Sheffey, Lamone, Peace… Tia Dae & Stan Mosely.
Thanks
Colin
