Brian Goucher / Soul Essence Etc.....

Garland Green “Blues Uprising” (CDS)
From the mans recent long player comes this very traditional floater, real instruments and that familiar voice makes this a simple must have, the other track causing a stir is of course “Come to me”.

Ivy Jo Hunter “Yea Yea Yea” (Soul Junction)
An absolute must have 45 for this slinky mid pacer and the other side is straight out of the Garfield Flemming mould.

Willie West “Long Gone” (CDS)
Donnie Ray “Secret is so hard to keep” (Ecko)
Sir Lawrence “Skating on thin ice” (Smooth Groove Productions)
Vel Omar “Give me your love” (CDS)

4 examples of modern day balladry that are simply begging to be appreciated by a wider audience, but it isn’t going to happen outside of my circles any time soon.

Charles Bradley “Stay away” (Dunham)
Yet another must have 45 from the current undisputed king of soul, which is not on his album, reminds me of very early James Brown, stunning soul and then some.

Derobert & The Half Truths “I know” (Ged Soul)
From there 2009 album and one that refuses to be filed away, there recent EP was stunning with two tunes being as good as anything Iv heard but on this track they have created a monster in the waiting, but how much longer do we have to wait?

The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker & Betty Lavette “ Your’s and mine” (Outtasight)
And yet another recent killer 45 which should be nestling in your collection, quality mid tempo and funky, with two great voices doing battle.

Willie Hobbs “Why does it hurt so bad” (Soulscape)
Unissued until Gary Cape kindly allowed us in on his secret and WOW what a wonderful slice of crossover soul it is too, what a voice.

T Honey Brown “You fooled me this time” (Download)
I found this whilst mooching around the babe and didn’t think much of it, then Mark Merry put onto one of his podcasts and I got to hear it loud on my system at home, I went straight onto the babe and downloaded it cursing my ignorance. Had Scotland Fraser Dunne foaming at the mouth at the recent Essence weekender where it sounded brilliant over the huge system.

Clarence Carter “Say a little prayer for me” (Fame/Kent)
A tidy little 45 with a cracking sleeve put out to commemorate record store day which contains 2 fabulous unissued tracks from CC. Wonderful soul music.
