‘Let me be free’ / Don’t go breaking my heart’

Label: Hit & Run Records – Catalog: HR1527 – Release Date: Out Now – Format: 7’

A coupling here of 2 ultra rare and brilliant dance tracks from Atlanta Ga.1969s ‘Let me be free’ is possibly the rarest Tragar 45 with reputedly only 100 being pressed to fulfil a contractual obligation; the flip was originally recorded in 1968 and destined for a Tragar release but delayed as considered too sensual for a Southern audience and released one year later.

Mary Gresham

‘Use me’ / ‘Nobody’s going to turn me against you’

Label: MD Records – Catalog: IRSC GX3HE2100003 / ISRC GX3HE2100004 Release Date: End of April 2021 – Format: 7’

Mary, Jimmy Gresham’s sister, was recording for Fame, Broadway and Wishbone studios. These 2 tracks come from an album recorded in 1973 that did not see the light of day until 2008 on a CD release “Voice from the Shadows”. Despite some other tracks also making it onto 45 release from this labium, these 2 tracks never did. Mary is a full-on Southern Sister funk bomb on these outings, “Use me” is mean and moody, deep and funky, flip it over for something lighter but packs the soulful punch of a classic mid paced southern crossover dancer. She is still recording and playing to this day and expect to see more of her work on future MD releases.

‘Get Up, Get Up’

Label: Cordial Recordings – Catalog: CORD7025 – Release Date: Out Now – Format: 7’

We decided at the beginning to release it as a single and not to include it on the vinyl release album. It is included on the CD version. It’s a sprightly energetic warm song that’s lifts your spirit on listens. We’ve also included ‘Get Up On The Dancefloor’ on the flip because we’ve had a lot feedback on this being the best cut on the vinyl album.

Label: Tesla Groove International / Cannonball Records / 4Quarti Catalog: CBLL033 – Release Date: May 2021 – Format: 7’

Here we go with another little number within our Detroit series. There’s not much more we can say about Steve Mancha and his career that was not not already said by folks way more knowledgeable than us in the scene. Just the little detail about this one, which was recorded short after he left Motown to work with Don Davis after several troubled attempts to hit the charts with quite a few songs and performing combos.
