New and Jazzy Releases for August 2024

Jazz First by Tony Poole

Here’s another set of ten new jazz track recommendations worth checking out released during August 2024.

Being There by Andy Hay from Polaris (Andy Hay Music)
From Andy’s sixth album and following on from ‘’Children Of The Sun’ which featured the jazz dance monster ‘I Believe In Love’. The welsh drummer provides another spiritual set from the heart. Included is this modal groover that’s sure to receive plenty of air-play.

Palo de Oros (Suit of Coins) by Patricia Brennan Septet from Breaking Stretch (Pyroclastic Records)
Vibraphonist, marimbist and composer Patriocia Brennan has been widely feted as one of the instrument’s newer leaders. On this, the lead single, following an extended bass solo intro by Kim Cass, the band launches into an ‘on the edge’, almost chaotic, jazz attack with wild horns and electronic zings. Brennan gives a dynamic solo between drums and percussion…Boom!

Pick It Up by Johnny Biner – single (Wicked Wax Music)
Dutch guitarist Johnny Biner ‘Pick It Up’ is the second single from his forthcoming album ‘A Way Out.’ It’s a tastey 70’s Brazilian/jazz fusion-inspired tune to accompany the hot summer days. His music is a fusion, blending elements of Herbie Hancock’s jazz-funk, old-school blues guitar solos reminiscent of B.B. King, A Tribe Called Quest-inspired beats, and Brazilian harmonies echoing Toninho Horta and Ivan Lins.

Vibrations by Warren Wolf from History Of The Vibraphone (Cellar Live Music)
Warren Wolf “What I decided to do is to play material from some of the top players who’ve ever held a pair of mallets in their hands.” Those artists include Terry Gibbs, Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, Cal Tjader, Gary Burton, Roy Ayers, Dave Samuels and Joe Locke.” ‘Vibrations’ is a Roy Ayers Ubiquity original composition from 1976.

Vibe Provider by Emmet Cohen from Vibe Provider (Mack Avenue Records)
Emmet has travelled the globe performing with his trio. I saw him give a dynamic performance at the San Javier International Jazz Festival in the summer of 2022. He has created and hosts the “most highly watched regular online jazz show in the world” (The Guardian) with ‘Live From Emmet’s Place’ on YouTube – the most exclusive jazz club in NYC… personal invite only! The album is produced by Emmet and my soul brother from another mother and father, drummer Kyle Poole.

Jazz by Galliano from Halfway Somewhere (Brownswood Recordings)
Released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings record label, Galliano are back three decades on from their last release, with a new album ‘Halfway Somewhere’. Lots for acid jazzers to get stuck into. ‘Jazz’ is a remake of the original from the 1992 Talking Loud release ‘A Joyful Noise Unto The Creator.’ A completely new vibe, way more uptempo, with swirling synths and a funky fusion-style groove. Rob & Co. are back better than ever.

Law (feat Jarrod Lawson) by greatergood from Change Of Plans (Albina Music Trust)
Greaterkind is a collective of regional jazz and roots-based musicians out of Portland, Oregon, channeling elements of jazz fusion and funk with undertones of R&B, gospel and hip hop. ‘Law’ featuring guest artist Jarrod Lawson on keys is a short but slick slice of jazz funk.

Orbiting by Soren Skov Orbit from Adrift (Frederiksberg Records)
Søren Skov Orbit feature Danish tenor and soprano saxophonist Søren Skov (Debre Damo Dining Orchestra) and keyboardist Peder Vind who co-founded this trippy quintet in 2016. On their latest project ‘Adrift’ they take an outernational journey into deep jazz and explore “more jazzy ideas.” Check out the cosmic-ish ‘Orbiting’. Perfect music for my ‘Earthlapse’ TV screen saver playlist.

Summertime by Ese & The Vooduu People – radio edit from ‘Is This Jazz?’ (Quadrafon Music)
A sensual jazzy soul version of the George Gershwin aria. Pier pressure from Robbie Vincent who requested a radio edit from the original 9-minute version which could be played on his Jazz FM radio show. The London-based Ese is inspired by an eclectic selection of legends from Jimi Hendrix, Sly & The Family Stone and Led Zep to Dr. John, Prince and SkunkAnansie.

(Used To Be A) Cha-Cha by Tomas Merlo from Jaco Pastorius Legacy 5tet (Tomas Merlo)
Tomas Merlo is a multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Madrid. He writes music for films, video games and commercials. His prefered instrument is the electric bass and he is a disciple of the bass innovator Jaco Pastorius. His latest project, the Jaco Pastorius Legacy 5tet, offers a fine version of (Used To Be A) Cha-Cha from Jaco’s groundbreaking 1976 debut album.
