    The Detroit Emeralds
    American soul group. Initially formed as The Emeralds in Little Rock, Arkansas, in the 1960s by the four Tilmon brothers Abrim, Ivory, Cleophus, and Raymond.

    In the late 1960s Abrim and Ivory Tilmon with James Mitchell moved to Detroit and reformed the group as the “Detroit Emeralds”. They signed with Westbound Records  in 1970. Between 1971–1973 their backing band were Chapter 8. Their best known songs were “Feel The Need In Me”, “Do Me Right”, “You Want It, You Got It” and “Baby Let Me Take You (In My Arms)”. In the mid-1970s the group began to fall apart and in 1977 Abrim Tilmon  hired Paul Riser. Maurice King and Johnny Allen  as permanent members. By the late 1970s there were two parallel groups performing live as the (Detroit) Emeralds. Former members James Mitchell and Marvin Willis  formed the disco-soul group The Floaters

    Ronnie Laws has redefined the sound of contemporary jazz, funk, and soul, creating melodies that became the blueprint for much of today’s popular music.

    Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Ronnie Laws grew up in a deeply musical household guided by his mother, Miola Laws who was a choir director and organist whose love of gospel, harmony, and spiritual expression shaped the creative foundation for her children. From that nurturing environment came one of music’s most talented families including Hubert Laws, Eloise Laws, and Debra Laws. Each of whomhas made significant contributions to jazz, R&B;, and popular music.

    Eloise Laverne Laws was born in Houston, Texas, as the fourth of eight children of Miola Luverta Donahue and Hubert Laws, Sr.
    Born into a family of musicians, her siblings include flutist Hubert, saxophonist Ronnie, and vocalist Debra. Eloise studied music at Texas Southern University and in1965 she won a national talent contest from CBS Television Networks and received a Fellowship that took her from Houston to New York where she studied music, dance and acting. While with CBS Television she performed on various network television shows and was offered a CBS recording contract from Clive Davis.

    Oliver Cheatham was an American contemporary R&B singer who is best remembered for “Get Down Saturday Night” co-wrote with Kevin McCord.
    Oliver originally a member of the groups The Young Sirs (whose line up featured: Mike Johnson, Allen Cocker, Oliver Cheatham, Ronald Noel & Van Johnson), Butch and the Newports, Mad Dog And The Pups and The Gaslight.

    Barry Burford Singer, Tenor-Baritone.
    Once sang with The Nathan Schaeffer Corral also attended Chicago’s famed Harlan High School. During the mid 1970’s Barry was a session singer, studio singer and a backing vocalist for his good friend Bobby Womack. In the early 1980’s Barry, his brother Kevin Burford and Charles Reilly formed the group Nimbiss and recorded on their own record labels FullScope Records & Shy – Backed Records. Barry went on to become a member of The New Lost Generation and Maurice & ET Group with Eddie Thomas (Curtom Records) and Maurice Jackson (The Independents)

    Wali Ali went on to become a member of the Original Funk Brothers until 1972 when Motown moved to L.A. While in Los Angeles he became the Lead Guitarist for the Temptations, Eddie Kendricks, Teena Marie, Rick James & Patrice Rushen among others. Wali Ali also toured as guitarist with Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, and Glady’s Knight.

    Legendary Memphis soul brothers William Bertram and Randy Brown 

    The Browns’ contribution to the Memphis music scene is etched in history. William, who sadly passed away in 2015 was a member of The Mad Lads. Randy and Bertram were members of The Newcomers, Bertram went on to be a part of soul funk group Kwick and of course Randy had a glittering solo career with LPs on Parachute, Chocolate City and Stax as well as numerous singles; he is regarded by many as being one of the finest vocalists of his genre.
